In the 1993 film, Groundhog Day, Phil (played by the remarkable Bill Murray) wakes up to the same day over and over again—trapped in a loop he can’t escape. For many clients, this feels familiar. Not literally, of course, but emotionally.
You might not be reliving February 2nd, but you are reliving the same relationship patterns, the same arguments, the same fears of abandonment or rejection, the same self-criticism, the same lonely or anxious cycles.
Just like Phil, you may feel like no matter what you do, nothing changes. Logic doesn’t fix it. Wishing doesn’t fix it. Trying harder doesn’t fix it.
I’ve been Phil. You’ve been Phil. To some extent, we’ve all been Phil.
Spoiler Alert!
In the film, Phil only escapes the time loop when he stops chasing external solutions and begins healing internally.
This is what finding a good therapist supports you with. Creating a safe space, free from judgement, where you can reflect on your thoughts, your behaviors, your patterns, and finally break free from the loop.
Since I was a kid, I’ve been drawn to understanding the human experience—the loops we repeat and the stories that shape us. Growing up, I had the privilege of experiencing other cultures, which sparked my curiosity about people’s histories. I originally wanted to be an archaeologist, until I realized I hated digging in the dirt all day. By the time I took my first psychology class in high school, I knew my path was to become a therapist.
While my curiosity didn’t lead me to digging in dirt and sand, it did lead me to exploring and understanding individual human experiences – including myself.
While I can’t promise specific outcomes, I can promise I will never ask you to do anything I haven’t done—or wouldn’t do—myself. I practice what I preach, even if I’m not perfect at it. I’m doing my own work to break free of my loops, just as I’ll be alongside you as you work to break free of yours. The work may never fully end, but you’ll eventually feel steady and confident carrying it forward without needing my support.
If you feel ready to take the next step to break free from the loops you keep finding yourself in, reach out. I’ll be here ready to support.
